WHO WE ARE
THE NATIONAL FORUM AND VOICE FOR IN-HOUSE COUNSEL IN CANADA

A VIBRANT AND GROWING MEMBER ASSOCIATION

WHO WE ARE

The Canadian Corporate Counsel Association is the only member organization in Canada providing a dedicated national forum and voice for the in-house counsel profession.

Established in 1988 as a conference of the Canadian Bar Association, CCCA is now more than 10,100 members strong and growing rapidly. Our membership consists of corporate counsel employed in virtually every industry in Canada, encompassing public and private businesses, non-profit organizations, municipalities and crown corporations. We also welcome associate members from law firms whose support and expertise enrich our educational programs and events.

CCCA holds two national conferences a year, our National Spring Conference in April and Annual Meeting in August. These events offer substantive educational programs focused on issues facing in-house lawyers today, and feature speakers and panelists from leadership roles in business, government, policy and law, in Canada and beyond. CCCA conferences provide our members with unparalleled opportunities to network and share ideas with their Canadian colleagues, as well as contacts from CCCA's affiliated corporate counsel associations in the United States, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong.

In addition, the Association provides stand-alone continuing legal education and management seminars throughout the year, supports learning and peer-to-peer networking opportunities for eleven CCCA Chapters nationwide, recognizes excellence in the profession, and offers a variety of benefits serving the unique needs of in-house counselWe welcome your questions – and invite you to join us!

The Importance of Support

While CBA membership is a prerequisite to membership in the CCCA, the membership fees paid by corporate counsel do not directly support the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association. CCCA receives an annual allotment of funds from the CBA under a Protocol passed in April 1996. Beyond this, CCCA is responsible for the task of raising additional revenue to support membership activities. This underscores the importance of the many prestigious firms who participate in the Association's success, both financially and through their expertise, as CCCA Preferred Suppliers, Recognized Suppliers, National Spring Conference Sponsors, Annual Meeting Sponsors and by developing programs for our Chapter Seminar Series across Canada. Advertising and editorial contributions in our national publications and on our website are also important factors in successfully serving the needs of our members.

Our History and Strength

In 1986, the largest gathering of in-house counsel ever held in Canada unanimously endorsed the creation of a structure to meet the unique needs of in-house counsel – and to recognize the profession’s increasingly influential role and responsibilities in the ethics and success of Canadian corporations. In 1988, the National Council of the Canadian Bar Association established the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association to replace its national corporate law section. The provincial sections of the CBA then became CCCA Chapters and proceeded to elect the first CCCA Board of Directors. Today, the relationship between the Canadian Bar Association and the CCCA provides membership in both organizations at no additional cost beyond the CBA membership fee. This guarantees our members a powerful resource network, a strong national voice – and the combined benefits of both organizations to draw upon!
