First established in 1988, the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association is the national forum for in-house counsel in Canada. As corporate counsel, we share certain roles and responsibilities:

  • we manage risks
  • we implement transactions
  • we design policies and procedures
    and
  • we link our employer’s business objectives with our legal requirements
What separates corporate counsel from each other are the organizations we work for. Our 8,700 plus members represent more than 1,700 corporations, business enterprises, associations, institutions, not-for-profit organizations, government and regulatory boards and agencies, Crown corporations and regional and municipal corporations, and more than 990 private law firms, across Canada. Each organization presents both comparable and unique challenges for its in-house counsel.

Our members have in-house responsibilities which extend beyond the legal affairs of their organizations. Many of them influence decisions in areas such as insurance and risk management, government and public affairs, business development, ethics and corporate governance, and environmental and regulatory affairs. To support the roles and interests of our members, CCCA is committed to delivering relevant programs and services on both a national and local level.

Our Board of Directors has approved a very ambitious business plan for this year in response to key objectives identified by our members. Our prudent business planning and financial success allows us to reinvest in CCCA and develop member programs and services that meet the needs of our members in today’s corporate environment. Our objective is, quite simply, to add value to your membership by helping you develop your career skills, experience and network.

Some of ways in which the CCCA is providing value are:

  • CCCA Magazine – Leading Corporate Counsel will be launched in Spring 2007 and will reflect and address the challenges facing in-house counsel.
  • Platinum CLE Series has been developed for members who require more sophisticated legal / business content and will be offered at major centers across Canada.
  • Spring Training Camp for new in-house counsel and new legal managers is returning after a most successful launch in 2006 and will be expanded to a full day for 2007.
  • Mentoring Program will be introduced in Spring 2007 to provide guidance for new in-house counsel from those who have the advantage of experience.
  • CCCA E-Newsletter is being developed to keep members informed of current CCCA events, nationally and at the Chapter level, as well as general information gathered from like organizations.
  • Virtual Library is being developed to enable members to access critical information via our website in an effective and timely manner.
  • CCCA Barometer Survey, as sponsored by Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, will be conducted for a third year to identify issues of importance to our members and will be supplemented this year with information gathered from select sessions with general counsel from certain industries.
  • CCCA/CBA Protocol, which was formally signed in Spring 2006, sets out ways in which CCCA and CBA will work together to provide CCCA members with the benefits of CBA’s national network.
In closing, CCCA, through its dedicated Board members, Chapter Presidents and staff, promises to do its very best to exceed your expectations.

We look forward to receiving your comments as to how well we are serving you and how we may better meet your needs. CCCA can provide you with many opportunities to learn, network and advance your career. Please write to us at ccca@ccca-cba.org with your feedback, suggestions, criticisms and compliments. This is your career and your association: the more deeply you are engaged with them, the better they – and we – will be.

President
